Leaders of Ridgely, Maryland, made a sudden decision on March 13 to suspend the town’s police force, offering minimal explanation for their actions.
Three commissioners declared that the entire local police force was “suspended with pay” immediately, citing a “pending investigation by the Office of the Maryland State Prosecutor.”
In a press release, the commissioners stated, “The Commissioners are currently developing a temporary agreement with the Caroline County Sheriff’s Department to guarantee uninterrupted public safety services for the citizens of Town of Ridgely.”
This decision left many of the town’s roughly 1,600 residents frustrated and perplexed by the lack of clarity, according to The Associated Press. Laura Cline expressed concern over the lack of transparency, stating, “What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way.” Similarly, Holly Justice, a local spa owner, felt blindsided by the decision, questioning the integrity of those responsible for safeguarding the community.
