The search for the gunman who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown continues, with authorities revealing new details about the crime. Investigators confirmed that the shell casings found at the scene had the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” inscribed on them, adding an eerie dimension to the already mysterious attack.
Thompson, 50, was killed in what police describe as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.” Security footage captured the moment the gunman approached Thompson from behind, firing several rounds into his back and right calf. Despite known threats against him, Thompson did not have a personal security detail when he was killed on his way to an investor conference.
The gunman, who was seen wearing a mask and black jacket, fled the scene after firing. Police have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, although it is clear that Thompson was specifically targeted. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation and searching for the shooter, who remains at large.
