Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley achieved success in the District of Columbia’s GOP primary on Sunday, marking her first win in a Republican nominating contest following several losses to former President Donald Trump.
Haley secured the Washington, D.C., primary with just under 63% of the vote, as reported by The Associated Press. The victory comes two days ahead of Super Tuesday contests, where hundreds more delegates are up for grabs, potentially intensifying the challenges in her path to the nomination. Expressing gratitude for the results, Haley wrote on X, stating, “Thank you, DC! We fight for every inch.”
While Trump emerged victorious in nominating contests in Missouri, Michigan, and Idaho a day before the D.C. primary, Haley managed to capture all 19 delegates at stake in Sunday’s contest. However, she still trails significantly behind Trump’s delegate count. On Sunday, Haley focused her campaign efforts in Maine and Vermont, among the numerous states participating in Tuesday’s primaries.
Commenting on the results, Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, stated, “Tonight’s results in Washington D.C. reaffirm the object of President Trump’s campaign — he will drain the swamp and put America first.” Leavitt also criticized Haley, mentioning that while she faced rejection in other parts of America, she was dubbed the “Queen of the Swamp” by lobbyists and D.C. insiders who aim to maintain the status quo.
