Naomi Osaka Upset by Emma Navarro in Wimbledon Second Round
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka faced an early exit at Wimbledon as she was defeated by 19th seed Emma Navarro. The 26-year-old, making her first appearance at Wimbledon in five years, lost 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
Osaka, who has yet to progress beyond the third round at Wimbledon, struggled with errors, tallying 16 unforced errors compared to Navarro’s five. The defeat marks another setback for Osaka, who competed as a wildcard following the birth of her first child last year. She had missed the 2022 tournament due to injury and took breaks from the sport in 2021 to address mental health issues.
After a tight first-round victory over world number 53 Diane Parry, Osaka faltered against Navarro under the Centre Court roof. The match saw Osaka lose a crucial break in the first set and fail to recover in the second, committing several errors that Navarro capitalized on.
Navarro will face Russian Diana Shnaider in the next round.
“I didn’t feel fully confident in myself. I didn’t feel like I was playing that well,” said Osaka. “I guess those doubts started trickling in a lot into my game. Obviously, the second set wasn’t that great.”
Coco Gauff Advances to Third Round
Second seed Coco Gauff dominated Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni to move into the third round of Wimbledon. Gauff impressed the Court One crowd with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in just 66 minutes. She will next play British qualifier Sonay Kartal.
Gauff’s win marks significant progress at Wimbledon after her surprise first-round exit last year. The 20-year-old reflected on her journey, saying, “Overall, I just learned about life a lot. I realised what I do, yes I’m passionate about, but it’s not that serious… At the end of the day, it’s a game, it’s a sport and I’m very privileged to be playing out here.”
