Former Biden Adviser Criticizes HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra’s Migrant Shelter Handling

Susan Rice, former Domestic Policy Adviser for President Joe Biden, reportedly referred to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra as a “bitch-ass” over his management of migrant shelters, according to Axios. Rice, who left her position in April, privately criticized Becerra for his perceived reluctance to expand space in child migrant shelters, also allegedly labeling him an “idiot.”

HHS spokesperson Jeff Nesbit emphasized the administration’s efforts to increase shelter capacity, noting challenges inherited from the previous administration’s restrictions.

In another incident, Rice reportedly passed a note to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a meeting where President Biden criticized Becerra, reading “Don’t save him.” Rice has reportedly clashed with Vice President Kamala Harris and DHS adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, with tensions dating back to the competition for Biden’s running mate position in 2020.

Rice believed she was more knowledgeable about the U.S.-Mexico border, an area where Harris has faced scrutiny since her appointment as “border czar.”
