OTTAWA, April 29, 2025 — Canada’s Liberal Party has claimed a dramatic electoral victory under Prime Minister Mark Carney, securing a fourth consecutive term in an election shaped by geopolitical anxiety and a contentious U.S. trade war led by President Donald Trump.
With 168 seats secured in the 343-seat House of Commons — just four shy of a majority — the Liberals fended off a strong challenge from the Conservative Party, which won 144 seats. The outcome marks a political resurgence for the Liberals, who were widely expected to face defeat earlier in the campaign.
Much of the electoral momentum was driven by Carney’s forceful opposition to Trump’s aggressive stance toward Canada, including renewed threats of economic annexation and proposals to make Canada the “cherished 51st state” of the United States. The rhetoric appears to have backfired, galvanising Canadian voters around a message of sovereignty and resistance.
In a defiant victory speech, Carney declared: “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us; that will never … ever happen.” He urged national unity in response to what he described as a fundamentally altered global reality. “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” he warned.
While Trump has yet to respond publicly to the election results, international reactions poured in, underscoring support for Carney’s leadership and the values underpinning Canada’s liberal democracy.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the outcome a reaffirmation of shared democratic values, pledging to “defend multilateralism and champion free and fair trade.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Carney’s leadership, highlighting the enduring alliance between the UK and Canada on matters of “defence, security, trade and investment.”
French President Emmanuel Macron praised Carney as embodying “a strong Canada in the face of the great challenges of our time,” while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Canada for its “principled leadership” and continued support.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and leaders from Australia, India, the Netherlands, and even China also extended congratulations, expressing readiness to cooperate with Canada on global issues.
Carney’s win cements his place as a central figure in North American and international politics. The former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in 2023 following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. His technocratic profile, sharpened by years in global finance, now underpins a growing political legacy defined by stability, resistance to populism, and a commitment to democratic norms.
As the world reacts to the changing political landscape in North America, Canada’s election signals a clear rejection of perceived US overreach and a renewed confidence in homegrown leadership to navigate the turbulence of global politics.
