Allenhurst, NJ – November 5, 2024
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center has reported the gruesome discovery of a butchered dolphin on a New Jersey beach, prompting a federal investigation.
The remains of a common dolphin were found Wednesday on the beach in Allenhurst, just north of Asbury Park. According to the center, the dolphin “appeared to have been butchered,” with clean cuts from a sharp instrument removing all flesh, leaving only the head, dorsal fin, and flukes.
Witnesses reported seeing a dolphin struggling in the surf Tuesday night near the location where the remains were found. However, it’s unclear if it was the same animal.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation.
