Beyoncé’s 2016 Song “Freedom” Gains New Attention in Kamala Harris’s Campaign

Beyoncé’s 2016 track “Freedom” is making headlines once again, this time as part of Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. Harris, who recently received permission from the superstar to use the song, featured it in her first campaign ad and as walk-up music during her public appearances.

While Beyoncé has not yet publicly endorsed a candidate in this election cycle, her history of supporting political figures and encouraging voter participation is well-documented. In 2020, the Grammy Award-winning artist endorsed President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris by sharing a supportive photo on her Instagram.

Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, has also voiced her support for Harris, especially following Biden’s decision to end his bid for re-election and endorse Harris as the Democratic nominee.

The recent approval from Beyoncé’s team allowed Harris to use the 2016 song “Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, throughout her campaign. Harris made her debut with the song at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, shortly after receiving the go-ahead.

Beyoncé’s music has previously played a role in political events, showcasing her influence beyond the music industry:

  • 2009 Inaugural Ball: Beyoncé performed Etta James’ “At Last” for former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama during their first dance at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.
  • 2013 Inauguration: Beyoncé sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration ceremony.
  • 2016 Hillary Clinton Rally: Beyoncé and her husband, Jay-Z, headlined a rally for then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio. Beyoncé expressed her support for Clinton, emphasizing the importance of having a woman lead the country.

Beyoncé’s involvement in political events highlights her commitment to using her platform to support causes she believes in and to inspire her audience to engage in the democratic process.
