Anti-Trump PAC Funded Mostly by Democratic Donors, FEC Records Show

Federal Election Commission (FEC) records have revealed that the Republican Accountability PAC, a political action committee (PAC) that recently launched an ad campaign targeting Republicans opposed to former President Donald Trump, received the majority of its funding from Democratic donors in 2023.

According to FEC records, nearly 75% of the donations to the Republican Accountability PAC came from just six major Democratic donors. Sarah Longwell, the executive director of the PAC, announced the launch of the “Republican Voters Against Trump” campaign, which aims to spend $50 million across six swing states to build an “anti-Trump coalition,” as reported by The Hill.

The privacy policy of the “Republican Voters Against Trump” campaign indicates that it is affiliated with the Republican Accountability PAC, redirecting users who click the “donate” link on its website to the PAC’s donation page. The campaign plans to feature amateur testimonials from individuals who voted for Trump in the past but do not intend to do so in 2024.

Despite highlighting Republicans who oppose Trump, FEC records show that the Republican Accountability PAC is primarily funded by high-dollar Democratic donors, who collectively contributed over $6.1 million in 2023, forming the bulk of the $8.1 million total raised by the PAC. Additionally, Defending Democracy Together, another anti-Trump organization led by Longwell and co-founded by Trump critic Bill Kristol, contributed $2 million to the PAC.

Among the liberal donors to the Republican Accountability PAC are prominent figures such as Reid Hoffman, Seth Klarman, John Pritzker, Robert Stavis, Robert Rothhouse, and Tench Coxe. While some of these donors have made occasional contributions to Republicans and Republican-aligned committees, the majority of their donations have gone to Democratic campaigns and causes.

Despite the significant funding from Democratic donors, Longwell maintains that her campaign is not aimed at building a pro-Joe Biden coalition. However, the campaign has posted videos urging support for Biden.

The “Republican Voters Against Trump” campaign is targeting states including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to The Hill. Trump currently holds a 1.7-point lead over Biden in Real Clear Politics’ average of polling.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Republican Accountability PAC, Hoffman, Stavis, Klarman, Coxe, Pritzker, and Rothhouse for comment, but received no response.
